Get to know your Milk!

Pasteurized Milk vs Loose & UHT Milk and why Prema is right for you

There are a lot of terms flying around as dairy companies fight the battle over nutrition and hygiene so lets start with the basics. What is Lose Milk, UHT and Pasteurization? How are they different and more importantly, which one is the right choice for you?

Loose Milk is  un-packed, un-chilled, un-filtered, raw milk, which is  often pooled from various informal sources & not treated in any way, so it starts out as a “natural” product. However the down sides include a complete lack of traceability, bacterial levels that are dependent on a whole range of “un-known’s” such as the environmental temperature, hygiene measures that are adopted and most importantly,  there’s the issue of adulteration in order to increase volume or  to enhance the color and perceived richness of the milk  (by adding water, bleach, fertilizer, corn starch etc)

UHT (Ultra Heat Treatment) involves heating the milk to about 138 degree °C for 2 seconds which kills all the bacteria in the milk & combined with aseptic packaging, allows for a much longer shelf life at ambient temperatures. This works for everyone as the product has a longer shelf life and is easier to store and deliver.  There can be no doubt that the introduction of UHT has made a very significant contribution to food hygiene & nutrition. However, this additional convenience comes at the cost of flavor, texture & a reduction in some of the nutritional quality of the milk.

On the other hand, Pasteurized Milk is heat treated at a lower temperature & for a shorter time as compared to UHT (just enough time & temperature to kill any harmful bacteria, but not enough to adversely affect the taste, texture or nutritional value of the milk).

Because of these advantages Pasteurized Fresh Milk & dairy products are generally accepted to be the best combination for health, nutrition & taste and Pasteurized fresh dairy products have become pretty much the standard in the developed dairy markets such as the US, Europe and Middle East.

OK, that’s the science lesson over, now the Prema pitch!

At Prema, we only produce Pasteurized dairy products and you can be sure every pack has come from our own herd of Australian cows (no pooled milk, no external suppliers, no loose milk collection, no additions, no adulteration). Our dairy cows are fed, housed & managed to the highest standards. It takes a bit more time and a lot more work but it’s the only way to guarantee quality from the cow to the consumer. At Prema we believe if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right !

That way our customers can be sure the milk entering our pasteurization & packing process has 100% traceability. But it doesn’t stop there, we are just not about producing & packing 100% certifiable milk but also the supply chain itself. We work with our premium retailers to ensure that when you choose a Prema product,it is as fresh & nutritious as nature intended.

It’s our commitment to quality that ensures Prema milk tastes the way milk should – good and fresh!
From the food that our cows eat and the comfort they enjoy to our milking process, pasteurization & packing, we do it all at our integrated dairy so we can ensure the highest quality as per international standards.

Introducing Prema HeartRight Low Fat Milk!

It’s been a busy month for Prema milk. We had some fun activity at the Prema farm recently with schools visiting to learn more about the entirely traceable process as well as meet Mini moo. We also launched our HeartRight Low Fat milk. It’s interesting to note that very few people know about the benefits of milk and how it is actually an energy drink.

“One beverage that is often overlooked as a recovery drink is milk. Milk’s nutrients – protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water—are rapidly absorbed and metabolized by the body to produce energy during and replenish nutrient stores after activity. New research shows that milk consumed as a post-exercise recovery and rehydration beverage is just as effective, if not more so, than commercially-available sports drinks, and can increase muscle growth.”

One of the major requirements for growing teenagers and athletes is Protein for which the Average Daily Amount recommended is 0.4 grams / pound of body weight. However, it depends on the type of athlete you are.

Here’s a table that can help you figure out how much you need:

Type of Athlete Daily Protein Recommendation
Recreational Exerciser, Adult 0.5-0.75 g/lb
Competitive Athlete 0.6-0.8 g/lb
Growing Teenage Athlete 0.9-1.0 g/lb
Adult Building Muscle Mass 0.7-1.0 g/lb
Athlete Restricting Calories 0.8-1.0 g/lb

You can also add some variety by adding some chocolate to your milk drink that can actually help boost recovery. Dr. John Ivy, lead researcher on the studies and chair of The University of Texas at Austin College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, Chocolate milk is an ideal post workout energy drink for athletes.

“On consuming low-fat chocolate milk rather than a carbohydrate sports drink or calorie-free beverage after riding a bike for 90 minutes at moderate intensity, then for 10 minutes of high intensity intervals, 10 trained cyclists had significantly more power and rode faster (reduced their ride time by an average of six minutes)”.

The Heart of the Matter

Is low fat milk the answer to healthier living?

Low fat milk is a healthier choice for you and your family, simply because it contains all the essentials present in milk. Since the calorie count is low, this milk can be consumed by people with special needs like diabetics, the overweight and the elderly. Several studies show that low-fat or non-fat cow’s milk can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes, delay natural menopause, and even lower the risk of high blood pressure. That is why we say, “Heart right tau sub right!”

The proteins present in low fat milk are untouched during its processing, hence it is considered as a source of biological protein. The presence of calcium and vitamin D help in both the building and maintenance of bones and teeth. Consumption of low-fat milk helps restrict the percentage of fat intake considerably, especially the saturated fats present in whole milk. This helps regulate blood cholesterol levels and thus decrease the chances of heart disease taking place. Here are some pointers on how to use low fat milk the right way!

NUTRITIONAL FACTS -01

If you drink cappuccinos or lattes — ask for them with fat-free (skim) milk. Add fat-free or low-fat milk instead of water to oatmeal and hot cereals.

Use fat-free or low-fat milk when making condensed cream soups (such as cream of tomato).

For dessert, make chocolate or butterscotch pudding with fat-free or low-fat milk.

Whole Milk vs Low fat Milk

The USDA recommends drinking three cups of fat-free or low-fat milk per day, but critics like Walter Willett, MD, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health argues that  drinking higher-fat milk leaves people feeling satiated longer, so they experience reduced cravings for other food. However, if a low fat milk, Like Prema Heart Right gives you all the nutrition of whole milk – 100% pure, pasteurized, homogenized with no water or solids added, you know you’ve got the real deal! Be fit, live right!
